Rosa Bonheur — French, 1822–1899 — French Realism
Rosa Bonheur was the most celebrated animal painter of nineteenth-century France and one of the few women artists of her era to achieve international fame and financial independence through her work. Trained by her father, a drawing master and Saint-Simonian, she studied anatomy at slaughterhouses and horse fairs, securing official permission to wear trousers for fieldwork.
