Salvator Rosa was a Neapolitan painter, etcher, poet, and satirist whose work helped define a more turbulent strain of seventeenth-century Italian Baroque. Trained in Naples and active principally in Rome and Florence, he built his reputation on wild landscapes populated by bandits, soldiers, and hermits, as well as on macabre subjects involving witchcraft and battle.
