Charles Willson Peale was a central figure in the artistic life of the early American republic, best known for his portraits of the Revolutionary generation. Trained briefly in London under Benjamin West, he returned to the colonies and produced an extensive series of likenesses of George Washington, beginning with the first life portrait in 1772, along with portraits of Franklin, Jefferson, and other founders.
