Netscher was a Dutch genre and portrait painter who trained in Deventer under Gerard ter Borch, whose refined interior scenes and meticulous handling of fabric shaped his early direction. After a period in France in the early 1660s, he settled in The Hague in 1662, where he turned increasingly toward portraiture for an aristocratic clientele.
