Emile Gruppe — American, 1896–1978 — American Impressionism
Emile Albert Gruppe was a New England landscape painter associated with the Cape Ann school in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he ran a popular summer painting school for decades. Trained at the Art Students League and abroad, he worked in the broken-color tradition of American Impressionism, applying paint with rapid, loaded brushwork that preserved the immediacy of plein-air observation.
