Jan Mankes — Dutch, 1889–1920 — Dutch Symbolism
Jan Mankes worked in a quiet, introspective register that set him apart from his more boisterous Dutch contemporaries. Active in the early twentieth century in the rural provinces of Friesland and Gelderland, he produced a small body of paintings, drawings, and prints before his death from tuberculosis at thirty. His subjects were modest: self-portraits, small animals, birds, trees in winter, the landscape near his home.
