Louis Jean François Lagrenée, called Lagrenée the Elder, trained under Carle Van Loo and won the Prix de Rome in 1749. His career bridged the late Rococo and the emerging Neoclassical taste, and he worked in mythological, historical, and religious subjects with a polished, enamel-like finish.
