Frederick Sandys was a British painter and draughtsman associated with the later Pre-Raphaelite circle, known for his rigorous draftsmanship and densely symbolic compositions. Born in Norwich, the son of a painter, he absorbed the regional tradition of meticulous observation before moving to London, where he became a close friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the late 1850s.
