Murillo was the leading painter of seventeenth-century Seville and, after the death of Velázquez, the most prominent figure in Spanish Baroque painting. He worked almost exclusively in his native city, producing devotional canvases for its churches, monasteries, and confraternities, including extensive cycles for the Convent of San Francisco and the Hospital de la Caridad.
