Sanford Gifford — American, 1823–1880 — Hudson River School / Luminism
Sanford Robinson Gifford was a central figure of the second generation of the Hudson River School and one of the principal painters associated with Luminism. Born in Greenfield, New York, and raised in Hudson, he studied in New York City before traveling extensively in Europe and the Middle East, sketching the Alps, Italy, and the Nile.
