Hans Baldung Grien — German, 1484/85–1545 — Northern Renaissance
Hans Baldung Grien was a German painter and printmaker active in the Upper Rhine region, working principally in Strasbourg and, for a period, in Freiburg im Breisgau, where he produced the high altarpiece for the cathedral between 1512 and 1516. Trained in the workshop of Albrecht Dürer in Nuremberg, he absorbed Dürer's draftsmanship while developing a distinctly personal sensibility marked by acidic color, elongated figures, and an interest in the unsettling.
