Vase Of Roses

Emil Carlsen — Danish-American, 1853–1932 — American Tonalism and Still Life

Soren Emil Carlsen emigrated from Copenhagen to the United States in 1872, where he became one of the foremost still life painters of his generation. Trained as an architect before turning to painting, he absorbed the influence of Chardin during a formative stay in Paris and built his reputation on quiet, tonal arrangements of copper pots, fish, game, and porcelain rendered with restrained palettes and atmospheric grays.
