Alexander Pope — American, 1849–1924 — American Trompe l'Oeil Still Life
Alexander Pope was a Boston painter and sculptor known for trompe l'oeil still lifes of game, hunting equipment, and animal subjects. Largely self-taught, he worked in the tradition of William Harnett and John Frederick Peto, producing meticulously rendered compositions of dead birds, rifles, powder horns, and weathered wooden boards. His paintings appealed to a sporting clientele in the Northeast during the late nineteenth century, when trompe l'oeil enjoyed considerable popularity in American parlors and clubs.
