The White Birch By

Thomas Dewing — American, 1851–1938 — American Tonalism

Thomas Wilmer Dewing was a leading figure in late nineteenth-century American Tonalism and a founding member of the Ten American Painters, the group that broke from the Society of American Artists in 1898. Trained in Boston and at the Académie Julian in Paris, he settled in New York and developed a singular idiom: solitary women in long dresses, placed within softly modulated greens and grays that suggest meadow, twilight, or empty interior.
