The Surprise
Francis Boucher — French, 1703–1770 — French Rococo
François Boucher was the defining painter of the French Rococo and a central figure in the visual culture of Louis XV's court. A favorite of Madame de Pompadour, he served as Premier Peintre du Roi and director of the Académie Royale, positions that placed him at the apex of the Parisian art establishment. His output ranged across mythological scenes, pastorals, portraits, tapestry designs for the Beauvais and Gobelins manufactories, and decorative schemes for royal residences.
