Léon Augustin Lhermitte was a French painter and printmaker known for rural scenes depicting peasant life in the Champagne region where he was born. Trained at the École Spéciale de Dessin in Paris under Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, he emerged in the 1870s alongside Jules Bastien-Lepage and Jules Breton as a leading figure of the Naturalist movement.
