Millet was a central figure of the Barbizon School and one of the foremost painters of rural labor in the nineteenth century. Born to a peasant family in Gruchy, Normandy, he trained briefly in Cherbourg and Paris before settling in 1849 in the village of Barbizon, near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where he remained for the rest of his life.
