The Seven Major Sins
Hieronymus Bosch — Netherlandish, c. 1450–1516 — Early Netherlandish Renaissance
Hieronymus Bosch worked in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch in the Duchy of Brabant, producing religious paintings whose imagery has had no clear parallel before or since. His triptychs, among them The Garden of Earthly Delights and The Last Judgment, populate biblical subjects with hybrid creatures, distorted figures, and inventive instruments of torment, drawing on late medieval moral theology, folklore, and proverb.
