The Repentant Magdalen
Georges De La Tour — French, 1593–1652 — French Baroque
Georges de La Tour worked in the Duchy of Lorraine during the first half of the seventeenth century, producing religious and genre scenes distinguished by an extreme economy of form and a profound investigation of artificial light. His mature paintings, often illuminated by a single candle or torch, reduce figures to broad geometric volumes and confine narrative to moments of stillness and contemplation.
