Frantisek Kupka — Czech, 1871–1957 — Orphism / Early Abstraction
František Kupka was among the first European painters to commit fully to non-representational art, arriving at pure abstraction around 1912 alongside Robert Delaunay in the loose tendency Apollinaire termed Orphism. Trained in Prague and Vienna before settling in Puteaux, outside Paris, in 1906, Kupka brought a background in spiritualism, theosophy and scientific inquiry to his investigations of color, music and motion.
