Gifford Beal was a New York painter known for vigorous, broadly brushed scenes of circuses, harbors, parades, and coastal leisure. He studied with William Merritt Chase, first at Shinnecock and later at the New York School of Art, and trained at Princeton, graduating in 1900. Beal worked within an American Realist tradition adjacent to the Ashcan School, favoring high-keyed color and animated, gestural handling over urban grit.
