Laurits Tuxen was a Danish painter best known as a portraitist to the European royal courts and as a central figure among the Skagen Painters, the artists' colony at the northern tip of Jutland. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and later under Léon Bonnat in Paris, he developed a polished academic technique well suited to ambitious group portraiture.
