Marcel Duchamp transformed the trajectory of twentieth-century art by relocating its center from craft to idea. Born in Blainville-Crevon and active in Paris and New York, he moved through Post-Impressionist and Cubist experiments before producing 'Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2' in 1912, which scandalized audiences at the 1913 Armory Show. From 1913 onward he introduced the readymade, designating mass-produced objects such as a bottle rack and a porcelain urinal ('Fountain', 1917, signed R.
