Mikalojus Ciurlionis — Lithuanian, 1875–1911 — Symbolism
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a Lithuanian painter and composer whose dual practice produced one of the most distinctive bodies of Symbolist work in early twentieth-century Europe. Trained as a musician in Warsaw and Leipzig before turning seriously to painting around 1902, he developed a visual language deeply informed by musical structure, organizing canvases into sequences he titled sonatas, fugues, and preludes.
