David Johnson was an American landscape painter associated with the second generation of the Hudson River School. Largely self-taught, he briefly studied with Jasper Cropsey and worked alongside John Frederick Kensett, with whom he shared an affinity for restrained composition and precise observation. Johnson concentrated on the rocky terrain of the Catskills, the White Mountains, and Lake George, producing carefully drawn views distinguished by clear light, controlled tonal range, and meticulous geological detail.
