Mark Gertler was a British painter associated with the loose circle of artists working around the Slade School and the Bloomsbury Group in the early twentieth century. Born in London's East End to immigrant Jewish parents from Galicia, he drew on this milieu for early figure paintings and family portraits notable for their solidity of form and saturated colour.
