Paul Klee — Swiss-German, 1879–1940 — Modernism / Bauhaus
Paul Klee occupies an unusual position in twentieth-century modernism, drawing from Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism while remaining stylistically independent of any single movement. Born near Bern and trained in Munich, he became associated with Der Blaue Reiter alongside Kandinsky and Marc, and later taught at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1931, where his lectures on form and pictorial theory were as influential as his painting.
