Gabriel Metsu was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age known primarily for refined genre scenes of domestic life, alongside portraits, market scenes, and a smaller body of religious works. Born in Leiden to the painter Jacques Metsu, he was a founding member of the Leiden Guild of Saint Luke in 1648 before settling in Amsterdam around 1654, where he spent the remainder of his short career.
