Marianne North — British, 1830–1890 — Victorian Botanical Painting
Marianne North was a Victorian botanical painter who documented the flora of distant continents through direct observation in the field. Beginning serious work in her forties, after the death of her father, she traveled largely alone through the Americas, South Africa, India, Japan, Borneo, Australia, and the Seychelles, painting plants in their native habitats.
