Cornelius Krieghoff — Dutch-Canadian, 1815–1872 — 19th-Century Canadian Genre Painting
Cornelius Krieghoff is among the most important figures in early Canadian art, known for his vivid genre scenes of habitant life and Indigenous subjects in mid-nineteenth-century Quebec. Born in Amsterdam and trained in Düsseldorf, he settled in Lower Canada in the 1840s and worked principally in Montreal and Quebec City.
