Sir John Lavery R.A. — Irish, 1856–1941 — Glasgow School / Society Portraiture
Lavery was an Irish-born painter who built his reputation in Glasgow before becoming one of the most sought-after society portraitists in Britain between the 1890s and the 1930s. Trained in Glasgow, London, and at the Académie Julian in Paris, he absorbed the plein-air lessons of the Barbizon painters and the tonal restraint of Whistler, whom he counted as a friend and mentor.
