Rossetti was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the group of young English painters who in 1848 set themselves against the academic conventions of the Royal Academy and looked instead to early Italian art for clarity of color and intensity of feeling. The son of an exiled Italian scholar, he moved between painting and poetry throughout his career, and the two practices fed one another.
