Antonio Muñoz Degrain was a Valencian painter whose work bridged late Romanticism, history painting, and an increasingly free, almost proto-Expressionist handling of color. Trained initially as an architect before turning to painting, he built his reputation on large-scale historical and literary subjects, including scenes drawn from Shakespeare and Spanish history.
