Orphan Boy

Akseli Gallen-Kallela — Finnish, 1865–1931 — Finnish National Romanticism / Symbolism

Akseli Gallen-Kallela was a central figure in the formation of Finnish national identity through painting, occupying a position in Finland comparable to that of Edvard Munch in Norway. Trained in Helsinki and Paris, he began his career as a Naturalist before turning toward Symbolism in the 1890s. His enduring contribution is the visual world he built around the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, in works such as the Aino Triptych and Lemminkäinen's Mother.
