Gustave Courtois — French, 1852–1923 — French Academic Realism
Gustave Courtois was a French academic painter known primarily for portraits and mythological subjects rendered with polished technique and refined naturalism. Born in Pusey, in the Haute-Saône, he trained under Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where the precise draftsmanship of his teacher remained a foundation of his work. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from the 1870s onward, earning medals and eventual membership in the Légion d'honneur.
