Mrs James Smith And Grandson

Charles Wilson Peale — American, 1741–1827 — American Colonial and Federal Portraiture

Charles Willson Peale was a central figure in early American portraiture, recording the faces of the Revolutionary generation with a directness shaped by Enlightenment confidence in observation. Trained briefly under Benjamin West in London, he returned to the colonies and settled in Philadelphia, where he produced numerous likenesses of George Washington, along with portraits of Jefferson, Franklin, and Hamilton.
