Thomas Sully was the leading portraitist of early nineteenth-century Philadelphia, succeeding Gilbert Stuart as the painter of choice for American political and social figures. Born in England and brought to South Carolina as a child, he trained briefly with Benjamin West in London before establishing his Philadelphia studio in 1808.
