John Frederick Kensett — American, 1816–1872 — Hudson River School / Luminism

John Frederick Kensett was a central figure of the second-generation Hudson River School and a leading practitioner of what later critics termed Luminism. Trained initially as an engraver, he traveled in England, France, and Italy from 1840 to 1847, returning to New York with a refined sense of European tradition that he applied to American subjects.
