Thomas Wilmer Dewing was an American painter known for ethereal figure compositions of women in shallow, atmospheric landscapes and sparsely furnished interiors. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris in the late 1870s, he returned to the United States and became a founding member of the Ten American Painters, the group that broke from the Society of American Artists in 1898.
