Claude Gellée, called Claude Lorrain, was the most influential landscape painter of the seventeenth century. Born in the Duchy of Lorraine, he settled in Rome by the early 1620s and remained there for the rest of his life, working alongside Nicolas Poussin within the circle of patrons that defined Roman classicism.
