Francisco De Goya — Spanish, 1746–1828 — Spanish Romanticism
Francisco de Goya stands as the pivotal figure between the Old Masters and modern art, a court painter whose private vision grew increasingly unsparing as Spain endured the Napoleonic Wars and Bourbon restoration. Appointed painter to Charles IV, he produced shrewd royal portraits that recorded character without flattery, alongside tapestry cartoons of pastoral life. A serious illness in 1792 left him deaf and seemed to deepen the inward turn of his work.
