Rodin is generally regarded as the figure who carried European sculpture out of the academic tradition and into the modern era. Working primarily in Paris from the 1870s onward, he modeled in clay and plaster for casting in bronze, producing surfaces that retained the marks of the hand and caught light in restless, broken planes.
