Kitchen In The Mount House, Stony Brook
William Sidney Mount — American, 1807–1868 — American Genre Painting
William Sidney Mount was among the first American painters to make rural genre scenes his primary subject, and the first to depict African American figures with individual dignity rather than caricature. Working almost entirely on Long Island, where he was born in Setauket and spent most of his career, Mount painted the farmers, fiddlers, horse traders, and laborers of the surrounding villages with close observation and a steady, unidealized eye.
