Ernest Townsend — British, 1880–1944 — British Portraiture
Ernest Townsend was an English portrait painter associated with Derby, where he maintained his studio for much of his career. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London, he worked in an academic realist tradition, producing commissioned portraits of civic dignitaries, military figures, and members of the local gentry. His work is held in the collection of Derby Museum and Art Gallery, including portraits documenting the city's public life in the early twentieth century. Townsend painted in a measured, restrained manner consistent with English portraiture of his generation, attentive to likeness and the conventions of formal sitting. He remained largely a regional figure rather than a metropolitan name, though his civic commissions place him within the documentary record of Edwardian and interwar provincial England.
Reproductions of Ernest Townsend's work from Cutler Miles are produced in our Pacific Northwest studio on archival cotton-rag paper using pigment-based inks rated for over a century of color stability. Available in standard reproduction sizes; custom sizing available on request.
