Hudson River Near Storm King
Samuel Colman — American, 1832–1920 — Hudson River School
Samuel Colman was a second-generation Hudson River School painter known for atmospheric landscapes and an unusually wide-ranging career as designer, etcher, and theorist. Born in Portland, Maine, he studied briefly with Asher B. Durand and traveled extensively through Europe, North Africa, and the American West, producing views of Spain, Morocco, the Rocky Mountains, and the California coast. His mature paintings favor luminous skies, panoramic compositions, and a softer palette than the Hudson River founders.
