John Sloan — American, 1871–1951 — Ashcan School
A central figure of the Ashcan School, John Sloan turned from newspaper illustration in Philadelphia to painting the working-class life of New York after relocating in 1904. He was a member of The Eight, the group whose 1908 exhibition challenged the genteel academic standards of the National Academy of Design. Sloan favored unguarded urban subjects: rooftops, saloons, theater audiences, women at windows, the streets of Greenwich Village.
