Clairin trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Isidore Pils and François-Édouard Picot, emerging within the academic tradition that dominated mid-century French painting. He traveled in Spain and Morocco with Henri Regnault in 1869–70, and the Orientalist subjects he developed there remained central to his output.
