Empress Eugenie
Jean Baptiste Carpeaux — French, 1827–1875 — French Second Empire Sculpture
Carpeaux was the leading French sculptor of the Second Empire, bridging the formal traditions of neoclassicism with a livelier, more naturalistic energy that anticipated later movements. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and a Prix de Rome winner in 1854, he spent formative years in Italy studying Michelangelo and the Baroque, influences visible in the torsion and theatrical movement of his figures.
