Maynard Dixon was a California-born painter and illustrator whose mature work distilled the American West into broad geometric planes of light, stone, and sky. He began as an illustrator for magazines such as Sunset and Harper's Weekly before moving toward painting full-time in the 1910s and 1920s, traveling extensively through Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.
