Christ And The Magdalene
Arthur Hacker — British, 1858–1919 — British Academic Painting

Arthur Hacker was an English painter associated with the late Victorian academic tradition, working in the orbit of the Royal Academy where he was elected a full member in 1910. Trained at the RA Schools and in Paris under Léon Bonnat, he absorbed the disciplined draughtsmanship of the French ateliers and brought it to a range of subjects including biblical and mythological scenes, society portraits, and atmospheric London street views. His early reputation rested on dramatic religious compositions such as The Annunciation and The Temptation of Sir Percival, while his later work shifted toward genre and urban subjects rendered with a softer, more tonal palette. Hacker occupies a transitional place in British art, bridging the high finish of Victorian narrative painting and the looser handling that emerged at the turn of the century. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy throughout his career and was a notable figure in London's art establishment.
